Continuing my exploration of the Arturia "Wavelengths LoFi" preset pack with something kind of inspired by Max Richter. This is the first one I've done this month that feels like a truly viable track idea. I love doing sound design, but I also love the practice of trying to make something with whatever comes to hand. Generally I kind of go through the presets in a pack in alphabetical order until I find something I like, and to add layers to whatever that inspires I keep searching down the stack in alphabetical order until I reach the end, wrapping around if necessary. By the time I get all the way through a pack I've usually favorited a few for future use and/or study

Ableton Note "finally getting the hang of this"
I am finally getting the hang of Ableton Note thanks to these weekend sessions away from my computer. A couple rough timing moments with the mute button but pretty good for something made with an app that (by design of course) can't really do much

JAMuary 15 2023 Ableton Note performance
This is the screen recording of the performance I just posted. Honestly Ableton Note is really great, but I am very frustrated with: 1) its seeming inability to remove every instance of a given note from a clip at once, 2) no quick way to quantize the ENDS of the notes as well for legato, and also no way to lengthen notes apart from playing them in again as it loops, 3) no open-ended jam recording mode (e.g., allow a clip with an indefinite number of bars so that I could record improvised stuff like that synthy solo). https://youtu.be/heVQE0TqNNo

Barely managed it but I did it! My main music making time today was spent developing one of the modular pieces from earlier in the week, and I thought well I’ll do Jamuary in a bit and then the day got away from me and here we are. This is kind of a throwback to the earliest days of Baby Tiger circa 2016 when I did nothing but the goofiest stuff

JAMuary 24 2023
This one started from a reversed chunk of a sample that I found in my pile, kind of at random. Hi hats got a little trappy in amongst the Stranger Things vibes!! Made with Live and a bunch of Pigments presets, and a Launchpad mini that I discovered in amongst my things while moving out of my old studio the other day.

Modular Test Run
Okay! I wish I had more time to check out everything here but it seems the best I can do is 1-5 a day. But I'm trying anyway... So! I finally got my embryonic modular setup going. This is a Minibrute 2S which I chose because I wanted something semi-modular and I also wanted a powerful sequencer... nuff said. I also recently bought a Drumbrute Impact because I heart Arturia. I synced the drum machine to the synth via midi and plugged them both into a little six-channel Yamaha mixer that I have, and recorded the output with my computer. The fade in and fade out was actually executed in real time on that analog mixer. Most of the time I spent on this, I spent creating the master sequence (a "chain" in Arturia parlance) which is 64 bars long. The initial sound is just a triangle wave and a sine mixed together with a longer decay and no effect but reverb on it. The second time around I played with the sound design very slightly and just sort of ignored the drum machine since I don't yet know how to create master sequences ("songs") on it.

random mallets with glitches
Couldn't really get to this until the very end of the day but I did it! Used Live. One mallet sound that I found at some point, reverbed and delayed, duplicated into 3 tracks, and randomized over 5 octaves with one track focused on the bass, one focused on the mids, one on the highs. Some of which are a bit too piercing! Added a glitchy kit run through Riffer and backed with a steady beat to give the whole thing a backbone. I like the result and this is another strong contender for Finish February.

Solo Piano improv
And now for something completely different... rare day spent entirely at home and I nearly forgot about this! So I went to the piano and came up with a rough idea for an improvisation, and recorded it as a voice memo. I'm classically trained, studied jazz improv in college (piano major), play keys in a funk band, and teach piano professionally so this kind of thing comes naturally to me (I've actually put out two albums of piano improvs & have two more on the way), but with all that training, is often not particularly original. I specifically do NOT have a piano at my writing studio for this reason. So this feels like a bit of a cheat but I'm going with it. I was listening to the Ethiopian pianist and composer Maryam Gebru this morning so I thought, maybe do something like what she does, mashed up with some typical moves from McCoy Tyner and Keith Jarrett? I roughly plotted out an A, B, and C part and left the intro and coda up to chance. After a few tries at the form I got something that more or less works without too many inadvertent notes. Enjoy!

LINK
The only thing I haven't tried out in my new office/studio/atelier was recording with my guitar, so I decided to create a pretty loopy thing in open G tuning, with plenty of reverb and delay and a cool effect built into Ableton Live (it's in the pitch shifting category) called something like "Octave Scrambler". Only today did I have the idea that I could put Discord on my phone and thereby keep up a little better with everyone else's contributions! I hope to do a lot of listening over the weekend.

Day 18. Just wanted to mess with some nice textures oh, and a warning, I used granulator ii, which is a free max device, for one of the sounds here. It was very cool, but I lost all but that one piece of sound design (I had recorded that into an audio track) when I shut down my project and returned to it. Very frustrating and it seems to happen to a lot of people, so if your using granulator ii make sure to capture the sounds your working on before you close the project
